Common Colds, Symptoms & Home Remedies for Common Colds Treatment
Medically known as Acute Coryza; common cold is an infection in the upper respiratory tract. This can be acquired more often than any other disease; an adult can acquire this two to four times a year and a child can have this six to ten times. There is a watery nasal discharge from day one and changes color and thickness as cold progresses.
Symptoms of Common Colds
A person suffering from common colds may feel the following symptoms one to three days after exposure:
- Stuffy or runny nose
- Itching or sore throat
- Mild headache or body ache
- Watery eyes
- Low grade fever
- Mild fatigue
Although common cold is not a harmful disease, it may lead to further infection. So, it is highly recommended that you seek medical attention if you observe these symptoms of Common Colds:
High fever 39 C (102 F) or higher
Fever accompanied by severe body pains and headache
Coughing, sweating, chills and colored phlegm accompanied with high fever.
Rigorous pain of the sinus.
High fever 39.5 C (103 f) with chills and sweating
Fever for three days or more
Abdominal pains and vomiting
Difficulty in breathing
Causes of Common Colds
Although there are more than 200 viruses that can cause common colds; one of the most contagious and most common is the rhinovirus. Virus can be transfers through different ways:
Direct virus exposure - If a person was exposed to virus, through direct contact with the infected person, there are great chances that he will have common colds. Exposures are through sneezing, coughing, talking and kissing.
Indirect virus exposure - virus can be also transferred by sharing your belongings such as utensils, toys and towels with an infected person.
By hand - virus can be transferred by touching infected things and places.
There are different factors that can trigger or worsen by sudden temperature change, lack of sleep, low immune system, fatigue, dust or allergies.
Home Remedies for Common Colds
There are different home remedies that you can use to treat common colds:
Lemon - it is a great remedies for common colds. It has lots of vitamins C. Simply mix with warm water and honey and drink once or twice everyday.
Ginger - another excellent remedy for colds. Simply boil with water and take twice daily. You can also use this as decongestant; after boiling put 1 glass of the warm decoction into a basin, cover your head with towel and sit above the basin. Exhale the vapor to relieve runny nose.
Garlic - take garlic soup once everyday to reduced cold severity.
Bitter gourd roots - mixed with equal amount of honey and holy basil leaf juice. Finely grind to create a paste. Take once every night.
Turmeric - mixed half teaspoon of turmeric powder with 30 ml warm milk. Take once or twice daily to relieve colds and sore throat.
Tamarind and Pepper - mixed 50mg of tamarind with 250 ml water, bring to a boil. After few minutes add one teaspoon clarified butter and half a teaspoon ground black pepper. Take this decoction three times a day to help clear your nose and eyes.
