Allergy also known as atopy, is a disorder in the immune system that occurs when our body reacts to the substances classified as allergens. The body's immune system reacts to certain substances and produce what we call allergic reactions, these reactions are acquired, predictable, and fast. Allergies are sometimes called as type 1 hypersensitivity which is characterized by exaggerated activation of certain white blood cells which results to extreme inflammatory response.
Causes of Allergies
Allergies are caused by allergens, meaning, when the body experiences a foreign substance that is not recognized by the immune system, they react to that substance and produce an immune response which is the allergic reaction to protect the body from the certain allergen.
May be caused by dust particles, fur or feather, powder, change in weather, food, smoke or pollution.
Other causes: drugs (antibiotics and aspirin), infectious bacteria and viruses, parasites and insects, inhalants like dust and pollen, chemicals, and other physical agents.
Signs and Symptoms of Allergies
Mild reactions include: localized or specific affectations on a specific area of the body. Examples are: rashes or hives, itchiness, watery eyes, and some congestion.
Moderate reactions include: symptoms that extend to other body parts e.g. the itching extends to other parts of the body, another moderate reaction is difficulty of breathing.
Severe reactions or anaphylaxis are life threatening. This happens when the body's response to the allergens become sudden and systemic. Anaphylactic shock may begin with simple itching, and then progresses more serious condition like swelling of the esophagus making it difficult to swallow and difficult to breathe, abdominal pain or cramps, vomiting, nausea, hives, quick drop in blood pressure causing dizziness and possible loss of consciousness.
Home Remedies for Allergies
Once you experience any of the symptoms listed above there are lots of home remedies that you can use to relieve these symptoms. You can follow these simple remedies:
Avoidance or reduce exposure to known allergens.
Prevent allergies by taking in vitamins like vitamin B5 and E daily.
Take 5 drops of castor oil in a half cup of any fruit or vegetable juice, or even plain water on an empty stomach in the morning.
Squeeze half lime in a glass of lukewarm water and add a teaspoon of honey. Take once daily in the early morning. But those who are allergic to citrus fruits please do not take this remedy.
Include one or two bananas in your regular diet; this is a good remedy in avoiding allergies.
Take 500 ml of carrot juice or a concoction of carrot juice with beet and cucumber juice once daily.
Avoid foods that have high preservative content.
Take chamomile tea with honey as sweetener one or two cups daily.
Include garlic in your regular diet, garlic builds or strengthens the immune system.
Take green tea once or twice a day to prevent excessive histamine production.
But before you take any of these home remedies make sure that you don't have any adverse reaction to the said fruits and herbs. If possible asks for the advice of experts, that way you will use properly herbs and right dosage.
